Whitefield, George

(1714–70). Founder of Calvinistic* Methodism; b. Gloucester, Eng.; educ. Oxford; mem. Holy* Club; deacon 1736; in Georgia 1738; returned to Eng. late in 1738 to raise funds for orphanage; ordained priest; began open-air preaching 1739; parted company with C. and J. Wesley* in the early 1740s; presided at 1st Calvinistic Meth. Conference, held at Waterford, Wales, January 5, 1743; visited Scot. and Ireland; made 7 trips to US.
