Thurston, Asa

(October 12, 1787–March 11, 1868). B. Fitchburg, Massachusetts; educ. Yale Coll., New Haven, Connecticut, and Andover (Massachusetts) Theol. Sem.; ABCFM miss. to Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii*) 1819; stationed at Kailua, ancient residence of Hawaiian kings; instructed Kamehameha II (Liholiho; 1797–1824; son of Kamehameha I; king 1819–24) and Kamehameha III (Kauikeaouli; 1813–54; brother of Kamehameha II; king 1825–54).
