Mörs (Moers), near Duisburg, Ger.; apprenticed 1713 to his brother-in-law, a merchant at Mülheim an der Ruhr; became an indep., merchant 1717, ribbon weaver 1719; turned to asceticism and seclusion; returned to society and began religious work ca. 1724, preaching, teaching, and helping the poor.
