Aquaviva, Claudio

(Claudius Acquaviva; 1543 to 1615). Jesuit 1567; 5th general of the order 1581; promoted Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola*; active in controversy on grace between Dominicans and Jesuits; under him the Ratio atque institutio studiorum (regulations for Jesuit officials and teachers) was put into final form (definitive ed. 1599) and imposed on the order; organized compilation of annual reports (Litterae annuae; 1583– ).
