Vladimir I

(Vladimir the Great; ca. 956–1015). First Christian ruler of Russia* (980–1015); became Christian (E Orthodox) ca. 989. Father of Boris* and Gleb. Before conversion he opposed Christianity by force; among his victims were Theodore and Ivan, perhaps the first Russ. Christian martyrs. See also Christian Church, History of the, II 1.
