Umbreit, Friedrich Wilhelm Karl

(1795–1860). B. Sonneborn, near Gotha, Ger.; educ.. Göttingen; privatdocent Göttingen 1818; prof. Heidelberg 1820; mediating theol. with supernatural tendencies. Works include commentaries on Jb, OT prophets, and Ro. See also Mediating Theology.

Umfrid, Otto

(1857–1920). Ev. pastor Stuttgart; pacifist; opposed rights of the strong as hist. rights; favored natural rights based on justice. Works include Friede auf Erden.

Umlaut.

Commonly used to mean a diacritic mark over a, o and u in German words. Alternate forms contain ae, and ue. Common names in LCMS history with which to substitute the alternate forms are: Löber, Gräbner, Löhe, Günther, Stöckhardt, Bünger, Fürbringer, and Crämer. Their alternate forms are Loeber, Graebner, Loehe, Guenther, Stoeckhardt, Buenger, Fuerbringer and Craemer.
