Changed hands repeatedly. Trinidad Brit. crown colony 1802, Tobago 1877. Slaves, imported under Sp. rule in the 17th and 18th c., were emancipated in the early 1830s. Amalgamated into a single colony 1889. Mem. West Indies Fed. 195862. Indep. 1962. RC miss. began with coming of the Spaniards. Others have included Baps., Salv. Army, Seventh-day Adv., Presb., Pentecostal. Prot. community: perhaps ca. 90,000 in the late 1960s.
