(Gk. “God-bearer”). Term used to describe Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, as mother of God (cf. Lk 1:35); upheld at 3d ecumenical council of Ephesus* and the council of Chalcedon.* FC Ep VIII 12: “Mary conceived and bore not only a plain, ordinary, mere man but the veritable Son of God”; cf.
