Twesten, August Detlev Christian

(1789–1876). B. Glückstadt, near Hamburg, Ger.; educ. Kiel and Berlin; influenced by F. D. E. Schleiermacher*; prof. philos., and theol. Kiel 1814, dogmatics and NT exegesis Berlin 1835; held that Confessions of the Reformation period should be basis of ch. in Prussia; Luth.; worked for union of Luths. and Reformed. Works include Die drey ökumenischen Symbola, die Augsburgische Confession, und die Repetitio confessionis Augustanae; Vorlesungen über die Dogmatik der evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche.

Twisse, William

(ca. 1578–1646). Puritan; educ. Oxford; pastor of rural parishes in Eng.; friend of W. Laud. Works include A Briefe Catecheticall Exposition of Christian Doctrine; The Doctrine of the Synod of Dort and Arles Reduced to the Practise.

Two Swords.

Term drawn from Lk 22:38 and used in reference to RC claim (expressed by Boniface VIII [see Popes, 12] in bull* Unam Sanctam) that there are 2 swords in the power of the ch., the spiritual to be used by, the temporal for, the ch. See also Church and State, 7.
