Halle, Berlin, and Greifswald; taught at Halle; court preacher Gotha 1856; gen. supt. in state ch. 1877; advocated freedom for ch. in doctrine, cultus, and govt.; cofounder Deutscher Protestantenverein (Ger. Protestant* Union); rationalist. Works include Das Wesen der Religion.
