Upper Thebaid; fl. 4th c.; suffered severely in persecution; said to have helped persuade the 325 Council of Nicaea* to leave the question of continence to the discretion of clerics who had married before ordination; (2) abbot in Desert of Scete (Nitrian Valley ca. 50 mi. S of Alexandria, Egypt); friend of J. Cassianus*; noted for meditation.
