Gotthelf, Jeremias

(pseudonym of Albert [or Albrecht] Bitzius; 1797–1854). B. Morat, Switz.; author; son of Zwinglian pastor; Ref. pastor in Switz.; influenced by J. H. Pestalozzi.* Opposed materialism; worked for religious education. Held that man can only prosper when he has love (sustained by love for God) for his fellowmen; God is the Greatest that can enter the life of man; the family is the first temple of God.
