Golden Bull.

Charter decorated with golden bulla as seal. Esp. the bull* of Charles IV (1316–78; king of Ger. and Boh. and Holy Roman emp. 1347–78, crowned 1355); promulgated at Diet of Nürnberg, January 10, 1356; gives details of ceremonies to be observed in imperial election; fixed the number of electors at 7 (abps. Mainz, Trier, Cologne; king of Boh.; count palatine of Rhine, duke of Saxony, margrave of Brandenburg); outlined procedures for convocating electors and crowning the emp.; arranged for administration of empire during vacancy; gave added rights to electors.
