Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana) premedical school and St. Louis (Missouri) U.; participated as US navy doctor in evacuation of N Vietnamese; received Legion of Merit medal 1955; resigned from navy 1956. Began medical miss. work in Laos in fall 1956; it later expanded into the Medical Internat. Cooperation Organization (MEDICO). Works include Deliver Us from Evil; The Edge of Tomorrow; The Night They Burned the Mountain.
