Diderot, Denis

(1713–84). “Pantophile”; Fr. philos.; educ. by Jesuits; became deist, then materialist. finally pantheistic naturalist; forerunner of positivism*; as ed.-in-chief of the Encyclopédie he greatly influenced the Enlightenment.* Works include polemics against Christianity.
