Davenport, John

(1597–1670). Brit. clergyman; pastor in Eng. 1615–25. Puritan sympathizer; helped procure charter for Massachusetts Colony 1629; to Boston 1637; founded New Haven Colony 1638 and became its pastor; made laws for colony with Theophilus Eaton; pastor First Church, Boston, 1668.
