(Peter Damian; 1007–72). B. Ravenna, It.; studied at Ravenna, Faenza, Parma; entered Benedictine monastery at Fonte Avellana, near Gubbio, It., 1035; prior ca. 1043; cardinal bp. Ostia 1057. Est. penitential exercises for hermits; opposed simony and other vices of clergy. Works include Liber Gomorrhianus; Liber gratissimus; Disceptatio synodalis.
