Cassirer, Ernst

(1874–1945). Ger. philos.; taught at Berlin, Hamburg, Oxford, Göteborg, Yale, and Columbia. Developed neo-Kantian philos. of Marburg School into philos. of culture. Held that physical sciences have developed a symbolism which must be placed alongside of other symbols (art, religion); man is animal symbolicum rather than animal rationale.
