(ca. 1540–1623). Eng. organist and typical composer of Madrigalion* Era. RC persecuted for his religious convictions; great polyphonist; music characterized by wide variety of expression, by grace, massiveness, and shifting tone colors. He and Orlando Gibbons* were musical giants of Eng.
