Brown, Abel J.

(1817–94). B. near Lincolnton, North Carolina: grad. Emory and Henry Coll., Emory, Virginia; taught at Jefferson Male Academy, Blountville, Tennessee, and Greeneville (Tennessee) Coll.; deacon 1836; ordained pastor 1837; pastor N and S Carolina, and for 36 yrs. Sullivan Co., Tennessee; leader Tennessee Syn.; one of founders of Holston Syn.; pres. of diet of Salisbury, North Carolina, which led to the organization of The United* Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the South.
