Brentano, Franz

(1838–1917). Ger. philos.; Dominican priest; liberal; seceded from ch. 1873 in protest against dogma of papal infallibility. Opposed “content” psychology of Wundt with “act” psychology, which holds that all mental life is activity and that experience is a way of acting; the task of psychology is to find meaning of act.
