(1853–1924). B. Paderborn, Ger.; Prof. philos. Breslau 1883, Bonn 1900, Strasbourg 1903, Munich 1912. Held that hist. is the evolution of the human spirit and that the past is immanent in the present and provides continuity. Wrote esp. on patristic and medieval philos.
