Under his pastoral leadership Swedes Lutheran Church, called Trinity Church (Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, Delaware), was built; dedicated June 4, 1699. Recalled to Swed.; left Am. June 29, 1714. (18321910). Norw. novelist, poet, dramatist. Early writings sought to demonstrate ethical power of Christianity; influenced by Grundtvig*; opposed Ger. pietism; later turned from Christianity to positivism and naturalism; believed in triumph of good.
