Wichern, Johann Hinrich

(1808–81). Founder of Inner* Mission; b. Hamburg, Ger.; educ. Göttingen and Berlin; S. S. teacher Hamburg; founded Rauhes Haus in Horn, suburb of Hamburg, as rescue home for boys; girls were included later. Emphasized love, freedom, and joy; est. training school for helpers, later called Brüderanstalt. Ed. Die fliegende Blätter aus dem Rauhen Hause. Other works include Nothstände der protestantischen Kirche und die innere Mission; Die innere Mission der deutschen evangelischen Kirche; Denkschrift.
