Fr. reformer; originally merchant of Lyons; renounced the world ca. 1173; devoted to religious study and preaching; he and his followers, known as Poor of Lyons, later as Waldenses,* used Scripture in the vernacular, preached without ch. authorization, and were excommunicated in the early 1180s.
