Wersau, Hesse, Ger.; educ. teachers' sem. at Friedberg; taught at a school for deaf, Friedberg; severed connection with state ch. for reasons of conscience 1859; to US soon thereafter; studied at the sem. in Fort Wayne, Indiana (see Ministry, Education of, X F). Pastor Hillsdale and Coldwater, Michigan, 1861; Sandy Creek, near Monroe, Michigan, 1863; Sebewaing, Michigan, 1867; Royal Oak, Michigan, 1873 (also 1st dir. of the Missouri Syn.. school for deaf [see also Deaf, 10] and head of the Missouri Syn. orphanage there).
