Smith, John

(Smyth; perhaps ca. 1570–1612). Educ. Cambridge for the Angl. Ch.; lecturer or preacher Lincoln 1600; deposed 1602, apparently for nonconformist views; Cong. pastor Gainsborough several yrs. later; with T. Helwys led a group of separatists to Holland ca. 1607/08; became Anabap. under Mennonite influence ca. 1608/09; bap. himself by affusion (hence often called the Se-Baptist, and his followers Se-Baptists).
