Requiem

(missa pro defunctis; Totenmesse). Mass for the dead; named after the 1st word of the 1st antiphon in the RC rite (“Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine”: “Grant them eternal rest, O Lord”). There are 4 such RC masses: 1. for commemoration of all dead (November 2); 2. for the day of death or burial; 3. for anniversary of death; 4. for daily (i. e., unspecified) use.
