(Hrabanus; Rhabanus; originally Rabanus Magnentius; called Maurus by Alcuin, after St. Maur [see Maurists]; ca. 776–856). Frankish theol., scholar, teacher; b. Mainz, Ger.; educ. Fulda and Tours (under Alcuin*); head of Fulda school 803; priest 814; abbot Fulda 822–842; abp. Mainz 847. Works include De institutione clericorum; De laudibus sanctae crucis; Poenitentiale.
