B. leper (Ypres), W Flanders, NW Belg.; prior Augustinian monastery Antwerp 1519; studied in Wittenberg 1521; preached against indulgences in Antwerp 1521; imprisoned; recanted 1522; resumed ev. preaching; arrested; escaped to Ger.; in Wittenberg 1523; pastor (1524) later supt. Bremen; friend of M. Luther; involved in A. Hardenberg* controversy on Lord's Supper; replaced by T. Hesshus* 1559.
