(Giovanni Angelo Medici; 1499–1565). B. Milan, It.; cardinal 1549; pope 1559–65; reassembled and concluded the Council of Trent* 1562–63; confirmed its decrees, but granted the chalice to the laity in Ger., Austria, Hung., and several other countries 1564; forbade laymen to read Scripture except by special permission; not related to the famous Medici* of Florence.
