Syn. of N Illinois*; spent most of his ministry in Minnesota (1859–60 Attica, Indiana); helped found Augustaria* Ev. Luth. Ch. 1860 and was its pres. 1874–81, 1899–1911; founded Minnesota Elementar Läroverk in Red Wing 1862 (later moved to Carver, Minnesota, as Ansgar Academy; relocated 1875 in St. Peter, Minnesota, as Gustavus Adolphus Coll.); founded orphanage Vasa, Minnesota, 1865 and served it 11 yrs.
