London, Eng.; sailor till 1755, the last 4 yrs. in Afr. slave trade; tide surveyor Liverpool 1755–60; studied Gk. and Heb.; ordained Angl. curate Olney, Buckinghamshire; produced Olney Hymns with W. Cowper.* Hymns include “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken”; “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds.”
