Holyoake, George Jacob

(1817–1906). B. Birmingham, Eng.; soc. reformer; influenced by R. Owen*; minister to Owenites at Worcester 1840; turned rationailst; first promulgated secularism* ca. 1846, coined the term itself 1851. Ed. Oracle of Reason and Reasoner; other works include Sixty Years of an Agitator's Life.
