Holbach, Paul Henri Dietrich d'

(1723–89). Fr. philos.; b. Edesheim, Palatinate, Ger., of Ger. parents; educ. Leiden; to Paris 1749; home became meeting place of prominent freethinkers (see Freethinker); one of the Encyclopedists*; attacked Christian religion as based on fraud and ignorance. Works include Système de la nature, which tries to combine materialism,* sensualism (see Sensationalism), determinism,* and atheism.*
