Ewald, Georg Heinrich August

(1803–75). B. Göttingen; orientalist: prof. Göttingen 1827–37, Tübingen 1838–48, Göttingen 1848–67; helped found Protestantenverein (Protestant* Union) 1863. In opposition to the romantic conceptions of J. G. v. Herder* and J. G. Eichhorn* he interpreted the OT prophets idealistically; approach to the NT opposed that of F. C. Baur* and D. F. Strauss.* Works include Geschichte des Volkes Israel. See also Higher Criticism, 14.
