Bradlaugh, Charles

(1833–91). Brit. atheist; soc. and pol. reformer. Ed. and pub. National Reformer in defense of freethinking; prosecuted 1876 with Annie Besant* for repub. Malthusian Fruits of Philosophy but won case; elected mem. of Parliament but not seated till 1886 (first because he refused to take oath and later forbidden); promoted soc. and pol. reform in India; developed secularism* into atheism.*
