Bowring, John

(1792–1872). B. Exeter. Eng. statesman, linguist, hymnist; Unitarian. Said to have acquired mastery of 200 languages and dialects and speaking knowledge of 100. Served in various govt. positions at home and abroad. Writings pub. in 36 vols. Hymns include “In the Cross of Christ I Glory” and “Watchman, Tell Us of the Night.”
