Baius, Michael

(1513–89). Flemish RC theol.; forerunner of C. Jansen*; had conflict with popes on questions of grace, free will, and sin; condemned by papal bulls (1567, 1579). In his system (Baianism) innocence is necessary component of human nature in original state; redemption restores original innocence; original sin is hereditary, habitual concupiscence.
