African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Began when African-America under leadership of Richard Allen,* Wm. White, and Absalom Jones withdrew from St. George Ch., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 1787 because of attempted racial segregation. In 1816 the African-Americans organized the A. M. E. Ch. as an indep. body. The ch. has a university, est. 1856, at Wilberforce, near Xenia, Ohio. See also Ethiopianism; Methodist Churches, 4 c.
