Wrangel, Carl Magnus

(August 23, 1727–June 12, 1786). Swed. Luth. pastor in Am.; b. Möklinta parish, Västmanland, Swed.; educ. Västeras, Uppsala, Strasbourg; ordained 1758; appointed pastor of Wicaco and provost of Swed. Luth. parishes in Am.; to Am. 1759; recalled to Sweden 1768; chief court chaplain.

Wrede, William

(Wilhelm; 1859–1906). Ger. NT scholar; b. Bücken, Hannover; taught Göttingen; prof. Breslau; adherent of Religionsgeschichtliche* Schule. Held that Christ did not claim Messiahship but Gospels contain later beliefs and that Paul radically changed teachings of Jesus. Works include Paulus; Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien.

Wreford, John Reynell

(1800–81). B. Barnstaple, Eng.; educ. Manchester Coll., York; nonconformist minister Birmingham; later withdrew from ministry and opened school. Among his hymns: “Lord, While for All Mankind We Pray.”

Wren, Christopher

(1632–1723). B. Wiltshire, Eng.; designed and rebuilt St. Paul's Cathedral, London (1675–1716), after the Great Fire of 1666; built 52 other chs. in London.

Wright, Andreas

(September 13, 1835–November 15, 1917). B. Norw.; pastor Coon Prairie, Rushford, and Highland, Wisconsin; one of founders of The Norwegian*-Dan. Augustana Syn. in Am. and The United* Norw. Luth. Ch. in Am.; served as secy. and later pres. of former; promoter of colls. and sems. (Augustana, Salem). Ed. Luthersk Kirketidende and Bornebudet.

Wright, George Frederick

(1838–1921). Congregationalist; b. Whitehall, New York; grad. Oberlin; pastor; prof. Oberlin, first of NT language and literature, then of harmony of science and religion, 1881–1907; served on US Geological Survey. Ed. Bibliotheca Sacra, 1884–1921; works include Scientific Confirmations of Old Testament History.
