(1856–1928). Cong. evangelist; b. Hoboken, New Jersey; educ. Yale Coll., New Haven, Connecticut, and at Leipzig and Erlangen, Ger.; pastor Garretsville, Ohio, 1878–82; active in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1883–89; supt. Moody Bible Institute 1889–1908 (and pastor Chicago 1894–1905); dean Bible Institute, Los Angeles, California, 1912–24. Works include The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith.
