Torquemada, Juan de

(Johannes de Turrecremata; 1388–1468). B. Valladolid, Sp.; studied at Paris, Fr.; prior of Valladolid and Toledo, Sp.; named Defensor fidel and made cardinal 1439; attended councils at Constance,* Basel,* Ferrara, and Florence*; regarded pope as supreme also over council; opposed doctrine of Immaculate* Conception. Works include treatise on Eucharist against Hussites; commentary on decrees of Gratian*; Summa de ecclesia. See also Annunciation, Orders of the, 4.
