Inhabitants (mostly Frisians) along the lower Weser, near the North Sea, in the 12th and 13th c.; revolted against ecclesiastical oppression; after many yrs. of war with the ch. they were nearly wiped out 1234 by a crusade under Gregory IX (see Popes, 11).
