Sem., Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania; ABCFM miss. to Dakota Indians 1837–83. Reduced Dakota language to writing; prepared a Dakota dictionary; tr. nearly all Scripture into Dakota; prepared many books (some original, some translations) for Dakotas.
