(ca. 1492/96–ca. 1559/61). B. Wittmarsum, near Bolsward, Friesland, Neth.; father's first name: Simon, which became the son's patronymic: Simon's (zoon); RC priest Utrecht 1524; in doubt regarding transubstantiation and under reform influences; priest Witmarsum 1531–36; left RC Ch. 1536; joined Anabap. movement 1537 and became its leader in the Low Countries.
