(January 11, 1810–November 26, 1881). B. Derendingen, near Tübingen, Ger.; educ. Basel and Tübingen; CMS miss. to Abyssinia 1837; expelled as a result of hostile RC influence; est. miss. at Mombasa 1844; traveled through E Afr. with J. Rebmann*; projected plan for miss. chain across Afr. from the north. Tr. NT and parts of OT into Galla; rev. Amharic OT; other works include A Dictionary of the Suahili Language.
