Torrelaguna, Sp.; Observant* prelate; statesman; at times anchorite (see Hermits); in 1492 became confessor to Isabella I (see Inquisition, 6); Franciscan* provincial in Castile 1494; abp. Toledo, primate of Sp. 1495; cardinal 1507; inquisitor gen. of Castile and León; in 1516 became regent of Castile for Charles I (see Charles V). See also Counter Reformation, 3; Polyglot Bibles.
