(Henry of Navarre; Henri de Navarre; Henry the Great; 1553–1610). King of Navarre as Henry III 1572–89; king of Fr. 1589–1610, 1st of Bourbon line; brought up as Calvinist; joined Huguenots* in religious war 1568–70; ended war with Holy League (see Holy Leagues and Alliances, 3) by renouncing Protestantism for RCm 1593; signed Edict of Nantes* 1598.
