Study of demons or of beliefs in demons or evil spirits; doctrine concerning demons. Ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Gks., and others believed in demons. In the NT, demons are evil or unclean spirits opposed to God; they constituted the hierarchy of Satan and took possession of people (Mt 8:16; 12:22–29; Mk 1:32; 5:1–20; Lk 8:26–39).
